The right choice depends on the architecture of your home, your budget, how long you plan to stay, and the local conditions your roof will face. Asphalt Shingles: Architectural vs. 3-Tab
3-Tab Asphalt
Flat, single-layer shingles cut to look like three tabs. They were the standard for decades but have largely been replaced by architectural shingles. Expected life is 15–20 years and wind ratings cap around 60–70 mph. We install 3-tab only on outbuildings, sheds, or short-term properties, almost never on a primary residence.
Architectural (Dimensional) Asphalt
The current standard for Connecticut homes. Architectural shingles are multi-layered with varied tab shapes and shadow lines, giving a richer, more dimensional look. Lifespan is 25–30 years, wind ratings of 110–130 mph are common, and they qualify for genuine lifetime warranties when installed by an enrolled contractor. Three brands dominate this category:
- GAF Timberline HDZ, America's best-selling shingle. LayerLock technology, strong wind warranty, broad color selection, fair price.
- CertainTeed Landmark / Landmark Pro, Heavier weight, deeper color palette, premium dimensional appearance. Slightly higher price.
- Owens Corning Duration, SureNail Technology gives exceptional wind resistance, popular in exposed hilltop locations.

Designer / Luxury Asphalt
Heavier, more dimensional architectural shingles meant to mimic the look of slate or cedar shake at a fraction of the cost. GAF Camelot II, CertainTeed Belmont, and Owens Corning Berkshire are the leading lines. Lifespan and warranty match standard architectural; cost is 30–50% higher.
Cedar Shake & Shingle
Hand-split or sawn western red cedar gives a classic New England look that no asphalt shingle has replicated. Expected life is 25–35 years with proper maintenance, and the natural insulating properties of wood add real R-value. Trade-offs are real: cost is 2–3x architectural asphalt, maintenance (cleaning, preservative treatment) is ongoing, and untreated cedar carries a lower fire rating.

Standing-Seam Metal Roofing
Vertical metal panels with raised seams that lock together, typically galvalume steel or aluminum. Standing-seam roofs last 50+ years, shed snow exceptionally well (a real advantage in northwest Connecticut), and never lose granules. The contemporary look isn't right for every house, but on the right home, modern, farmhouse, certain barn-style architecture, it's stunning. Cost is 1.5–2x architectural asphalt.
Slate (Natural & Synthetic)
Natural slate is the longest-lasting roofing material, 75 to 150+ years, but requires specialized installation and a structure that can carry the weight. Costs are very high. Most homeowners who want the slate look choose synthetic slate (composite or polymer), which gives a near-identical appearance, Class A fire rating, and 50-year warranties at a fraction of the cost and weight.
How to Pick the Right Shingle for Your Home
Start with these questions:
- What's the architectural style? Colonial and shingle-style homes look right with cedar or designer asphalt; modern and farmhouse homes pair well with standing-seam metal; most Cape Cod and ranch homes look best in standard architectural asphalt.
- How long do you plan to stay? If you're moving in 5–10 years, focus on resale appeal. If this is your forever home, lifespan and warranty matter more.
- Is the location exposed? Hilltop sites in places like Ridgefield or Wilton benefit from high wind ratings, GAF HDZ or Owens Corning Duration.
